SIBO / SIFO

SIBO (Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) or SIFO (small intestinal fungal overgrowth):

 

  • Abnormally high numbers of bacteria and/or fungus in the gut

  • Symptoms include: bloating, abdominal discomfort or pain, burping, gas and diarrhea

  • Can be accompanied by the following: Anemia,  (eg vitamins B12, A, D, E and other B vitamins, iron) since the bacteria involved can ferment your food before you can absorb the food’s nutrients completely

  • Can contribute to nutrient deficiencies such as: Food allergies, brain fog, and chronic fatigue

  • Increased risk with taking the following: Antacids, PPI’s, antibiotics, gut surgery, stomach infections, advancing age, and fad dieting

  • Conditions associated include: rosacea, fibromyalgia, liver conditions, digestive conditions (eg celiac or Crohn’s disease), pancreatitis, etc

  • Diagnosis: Organic acid test (OAT), Breath test for hydrogen or methane, Specialized stool testing

  • Recovery:  Low FODMAPs diet, Rebalancing gut microbiota (eg Oregano, garlic, etc)
